New Colorado Schools Offer Hope for High-Needs Students

New facility schools in Colorado expand support for students with autism and high needs—offering hope, specialized care, and critical access to education.

July 7, 2025

After years of declining resources and school closures, Colorado is seeing a renewed commitment to serving students with significant behavioral, emotional, and developmental needs. Four new facility schools have opened across the state, offering more than 100 new seats for students who previously faced long waitlists and limited options. These specialized programs are designed to support learners who cannot be served effectively in traditional public school settings.

The shift is a result of a 2023 state law that increased funding and support for facility schools, creating new licensing pathways and grant programs to reduce operational barriers. For families, it’s more than just policy—it’s a lifeline.

Who These Schools Serve

Facility schools cater to students with intense support needs, including those with autism, emotional disturbances, intellectual disabilities, and those who have experienced trauma. For years, Colorado had too few options to meet the rising demand, with only 30 facility schools remaining by 2023—down from 80 in 2004.

The new additions, such as TACT and the Joshua Early Childhood Center, are bridging those gaps. Some focus on early childhood intervention, while others, like TACT, help older students learn skilled trades and transition into adulthood with confidence and capability.

These programs are built on small class sizes, individualized instruction, and therapeutic support. While many of the new schools are located along the Front Range, advocates are pushing for expansion into rural areas where the need is just as critical.

Expanding Access to Autism and Behavioral Services

These developments signal progress for families with children on the autism spectrum. But even with new facility schools opening, access to consistent, evidence-based care remains a challenge—especially for families seeking intensive, individualized support.
