Temple Grandin turned autism into strength—now she’s inspiring others to thrive. Discover how her journey is reshaping autism support and hope in Colorado.
Temple Grandin wasn’t expected to succeed by the standards of her time. Diagnosed with autism as a child, she faced skepticism, misunderstanding, and a world that didn’t know how to support her mind. Algebra was a challenge. Social situations were difficult. But she saw the world differently—and that difference turned out to be her greatest strength.
Her visual thinking gave her a unique lens through which to understand animals, solve problems, and eventually revolutionize the livestock industry. From curved cattle chutes to industry-standard welfare systems, Grandin didn’t just prove the doubters wrong—she reshaped entire systems by leaning into her neurodivergence.
For Grandin, success wasn’t about accolades—it was about proving she wasn’t “stupid,” as many assumed. Her determination led her to design innovations that are now used globally, write 16 books on autism and animal welfare, and become a professor at Colorado State University.
She didn’t do it alone. Good mentors, supportive teachers, and people who believed in her made the difference. That’s why her mission today is centered on opening doors for others—especially children on the autism spectrum—so they can find their unique paths to success.
“You have to keep your eyes on the goal,” she says. “Right now, that’s motivating students and talking to parents of autistic kids about encouraging their kids to be everything they can be.”
What Temple Grandin teaches us is that the challenges of autism don’t have to be barriers—they can be launchpads. When we understand and support how neurodivergent individuals think and learn, we open the door to new ideas, creative solutions, and meaningful contributions to society.
That’s a core belief we live by every day at New Dawn ABA.
